A typical hospital-to-prison travel transformed into an unexpected hotel stay for an undertrial in the Rs 661-crore Haryana-Chandigarh fund fraud case, putting two Chandigarh Police officers and two sons of the accused in jail.
A court-approved medical visit to Burail prison real estate businessman Vikram Wadhwa allegedly led to his hospitalization. A cousin of Wadhwa's allegedly took the police team to a Sector 17 hotel instead of returning to jail.
They were sub-inspector Jagmehar and assistant sub-inspector Surinder. Arrested were Wadhwa, Karan, and Kunal. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Prevention of Corruption Act have booked all five. Sector 17 police interview them.
The preliminary inquiry found that Wadhwa, who is in judicial custody in the high-profile fraud case, complained of illness and was allowed to be hospitalized under police escort.
The escorting staff reportedly transported him to the hotel instead of Burail prison after the medical appointment. Wadhwa relaxed and received visitors at the hotel, according to police.
DSP Poonam Dilawari of Chandigarh Police and her squad raided the hotel and located Wadhwa, the accompanying police officer, and others based on specific information. Teams arrested them after taking them into custody.
Wadhwa was returned to jail, while the others were questioned by police. Investigators are reviewing if the diversion was pre-planned and whether additional police officers were involved.
Police are reconstructing the events and identifying persons who met Wadhwa at the hotel using CCTV video, visitor registrations, mobile phone location data, and call detail records.
Officials scrutinize escorting police officers' duty records, movement logs, and conversations. Police warned prison etiquette violators will face administrative and judicial punishment.
In its IDFC First Bank fraud probe, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) detained Wadhwa on May 29 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. ED suspected misappropriation of public monies from IDFC First Bank accounts of the Haryana government, Chandigarh administration, and two private schools in Chandigarh and Panchkula.
