The Mizoram Victims of Crime Compensation Scheme, 2011 handed compensation of Rs 1.28 crore to 29 crime victims in the Kolasib district of Mizoram on Friday, according to Aizawl.
Justice Nelson Sailo, a judge of the Gauhati High Court and the executive chairwoman of the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), presented the awards during a sensitization session in Diakkawn, Kolasib's UD&PA Conference Hall.
Justice Sailo addressed the recipients and explained that the aid was meant to help families who had been impacted by sad events. He begged them to be good stewards of the funds, especially for the sake of their children's health and education. He stated that while monetary compensation couldn't take away the emotional pain of a tragedy, it may assist impacted families get back on their feet.
H. Dolianbuaia, deputy commissioner of Kolasib, echoed this sentiment, advising recipients to put their children's well-being and future expenses ahead of their own wants and requirements.
The compensation could assist families in meeting expenses related to their children's schooling and future needs, such as marriage and higher education, according to V Vanlalhriata, secretary of the District Legal Services Authority and chief judge of the Kolasib district.
The MSLSA has paid out a total of Rs 16.68 crore in compensation since the program began. Officials from the District Legal Services Authorities have stated that they are still receiving new applications and are issuing compensation awards, with a total of Rs 51.25 lakh sanctioned through awards awarded after 2025.
Justice Sailo looked over the current facilities at the Kolasib District Prison and Correctional Home before the program began. He hoped that the prisoners would make good use of their time behind bars and be ready to contribute to society upon their release. Subsequently, he visited Project Veng in Kolasib to examine the fast track court building that was still under construction.
