A councillor of the ruling party in Jangaon district, Choudarapalli Sampath Raj, was arrested after allegedly attempting to sexually assault an elderly woman while in an inebriated state at Chagallu in the 9th ward of Station Ghanpur Municipality.

According to the victim’s son, the accused councillor—said to be an associate of MLA Kadiyam Srihari—stripped off his clothes, left them in his car, and barged naked into the victim’s house late Monday night to attempt the assault. When the woman started shouting in fear, Sampath Raj fled into the house's bathroom. Her family members, awakened by her cries, latched the bathroom door from the outside, effectively trapping him inside.

Enraged by the incident, the victim's family vandalised the councillor’s car before alerting the local authorities. Upon receiving the information, the Station Ghanpur police arrived at the scene and took Sampath Raj into custody.  

Station Ghanpur CI Venu stated that based on the complaint filed by the victim’s son, a case has been registered against the accused under Sections 333 (house-trespass committed with the preparation to cause hurt, assault) and 74 (criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and he has been remanded to judicial custody. Meanwhile, local BRS leaders have strongly condemned the incident and are demanding that officials disqualify the accused from his councillor post.
